Japan Coast Guard Training Ship Kojima-go
Surrounded on all sides by wide expanses of ocean, Japan is maritime nation that enjoys the benefits of the sea in the forms of maritime trade and fishing. However, these waters are also plagued by various problems, including maritime accidents, marine crime such as smuggling and illegal migration, and international disputes over the sovereignty of territorial possessions and maritime resources.
The Japan Coast Guard was established in May 1948. Since then, Japan Coast Guard (JCG) has been engaged night and day in a variety of activities, including criminal investigations, marine security operations, search and rescue work, marine environment preservation, disaster mitigation, oceanographic research, and maritime safety operations, and also working to strengthen collaboration and cooperation with other countries, all so that the people of Japan can use and enjoy the various blessing of the ocean environment.
At this time every year, the training ship Kojima carrying graduates of the Japan Coast Guard Academy (located in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture) embarked on a round-the-world trip and docked at San Francisco Pier No. 30 in May 9. We attended a welcoming ceremony on board the ship, followed by a tour of the ship. We were very pleased to be able to offer tea ceremony services nest day. They experienced the Japanese tea ceremony for the first time in the United States.
